Eliminate physical spasm preparations—maintain neutrality

Step 3: Now go to play a chord on the piano. Did you notice that your hand did something? That it did not maintain that natural shape and tonus but went into spasm of some sort? This is what most of us do: we prepare to play the piano by establishing more tension in the hand than we need. As I said, this superfluous tension intends to maintain the shape and structure needed to play with control. But that shape can only maintain itself. You can’t maintain it effectively, or rather you can, but only by consciously not trying to! Ironically, this preparation impedes control by distorting our hand’s natural shape and structure instead of maintaining it. This distortion or deformation of form hinders free action.
